Florida Humanities Council

As a strategic Viva Florida partner, the Florida Humanities Council (FHC) is dedicated to building strong communities and informed citizens by providing Floridians with the opportunity to explore the heritage, traditions and stories of our state and its place in the world.

FHC provides grants to non-profit organizations to provide public humanities programs and cultural resources in their communities. FHC also designs and coordinates workshops for K-12 teachers, conducts heritage tours, operates a humanities speakers bureau, and partners with libraries to provide family literacy programs and cultural exhibits. FHC’s award-winning magazine, FORUM, which is circulated throughout the state, provides historic perspective and cultural insight into a wide-range of Florida topics.

Statewide Viva Florida 500 Time Capsule

The statewide time capsule was sealed in Tallahassee at the R.A. Gray Building on December 31, 2013. The time capsule will be on display at the R.A. Gray Building until March 3, 2095. It will be opened on that day as a part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of Florida statehood.

To encourage activities in every community in each of Florida's 67 counties in honor of Florida's 500 year anniversary- the 2013 Viva Florida 500 commemoration - the Florida Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services provided a Viva Florida 500 Time Capsule to every county library in the state.
