Almost 70 miles (113 km) west of Key West lies the remote Dry Tortugas National Park. The 100-square mile park is mostly open water with seven small islands.  Accessible only by boat or seaplane, the park is known the world over as the home of magnificent Fort Jefferson, picturesque blue waters, superlative coral reefs and marine life,  and the vast assortment of bird life that frequent the area. In addition to Fort Jefferson, the most renowned structure in the Dry Tortugas which lies on Garden Key, is the Loggerhead Key Lighthouse.  Constructed in 1858, this lighthouse operated in conjunction with the Garden Key Light to guide ships through the shallow water and multitude of reefs.

This lighthouse is in a very remote park and arrangements must be made to visit in advance through the National Park Service: http://www.nps.gov/drto/contacts.htm
