Almost 70 miles (113 km) west of Key West lies the remote Dry Tortugas National Park. The 100-square mile park is mostly open water with seven small islands.  Accessible only by boat or seaplane, the park is known the world over as the home of magnificent Fort Jefferson, picturesque blue waters, superlative coral reefs and marine life,  and the vast assortment of bird life that frequent the area. Fort Jefferson is on Garden Key, and is also the site of is the Garden Key Lighthouse.  Constructed in 1886, this lighthouse operated in conjunction with the Loggerhead Key Lighthouse to guide ships through the shallow water and multitude of reefs.

Fort Jefferson and The Garden Key lighthouse is in a very remote park and arrangements must be made to visit in advance through the National Park Service: http://www.nps.gov/drto/contacts.htm
