Prominent Madison County citizen, Benjamin F. Wardlaw, began construction of this house in 1860. The home served as a temporary hospital for Confederate and Union wounded following the Battle of Olustee in February 1864. In May 1865, Confederate Secretary of War John C. Breckenridge is reported to have spent the night here during his successful escape to Cuba while fleeing from Union forces at the end of the war. This historic house is presently used as a conference center by North Florida Community College. Tours are available.
