Embry-Riddle developed two air fields--Carlstrom and Dorr--near Arcadia, Florida, to train pilots before the U.S. entered World War II. Many Royal Air Force cadets attended basic training at these two facilities as well as more advanced training at the air field in Clewiston. Twenty-three cadets died during training--some in flight and others in vehicular accidents--are buried at Arcadia's Oak Ridge Cemetery along with a monument for John Paul Riddle in a plot purchased by the British government. Every year since 1957, the Arcadia Rotary Club holds a commemoration ceremony on Memorial Day.
