Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is one of Sarasota’s most treasured attractions, home to a wide variety of tropical, exotic plant species that showcase colorful displays and alluring fragrances. The mission of Selby Gardens is to provide an oasis of inspiration and tranquility, while furthering the understanding and appreciation of plants, especially epiphytes (plants that grow on other plants without taking food or sustenance from them). Selby fulfills this mission by hosting seasonal and family-friendly events, educational lectures, nature-themed art exhibits, and classes on art, health & wellness, gardening, and more. Selby Gardens is best known for its extensive collection of epiphytes that includes orchids, bromeliads and ferns. Visitors enjoy flowering exhibits in the Tropical Conservatory where more than 75 different types of orchids are on display at any given time. Because of the ever changing scenery, Gardens guests experience new artistic displays curated by Selby’s horticultural staff with every visit. The epiphytes featured in the collection primarily derive from the tropical regions of North, Central and South America. Working closely with Selby Gardens’ horticulture and education departments, the botany program focuses on the inventory, classification, and conservation of tropical epiphytes.
