The Edison & Ford Winter Estates includes 25 acres of old tropical garden, 15 historic structures and a museum of inventions.  The gardens feature old fashioned and antique varieties as well edible and research plants. The gardens date to the 1880s and include champion rubber trees, unique flowering plants and trees, naturalized orchids throughout the site, and formal gardens created by both the original families and their favorite landscape architect, Ellen Biddle Shipman.

The gardens also include a propagating nursery, Garden Shoppe for plant sales, and organic vegetable and herb gardens. Florida can boast that these famous inventors and their families were also research botanists as well as lovers of beautiful landscapes.  Their riverside estates are a very unique combination of beauty and practicality as they were created when southwest Florida was the southern frontier area for the new state. Today visitors to the gardens can enjoy special Garden Tours and Classes.  The site has been designated as a Florida Historic Landmark and recently won the top award from the National Garden Clubs, Inc. in 2010 and National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2009.

The site is open daily 9-5 and in December until 10 PM for the lighted Holiday Nights.
