Constructed in 1856, this house was the residence of Peres B. Brokaw, a Tallahassee businessman and political leader who served as the captain of a local militia unit, the Leon Cavalry. A supporter of secession, Brokaw led his troops in torchlight demonstrations during the January 1861 Florida Secession Convention, and served as a captain in the 2nd Florida Cavalry during the Civil War. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, this home now offices the Florida Department of State’s Division of Cultural Affairs.
