The 1539-1540 Hernando de Soto winter encampment site in Tallahassee at the Governor John Martin House is the first archaeologically confirmed location of the historical expedition of Hernando de Soto and the Indian village of Anhaica.  Found in 1987 by state archaeologist, B. Calvin Jones, the site also features the historical mansion, built in the 1930s, of Governor John Martin.  The property is currently owned by the State of Florida and houses the offices of the Bureau of Archaeological Research. During normal business hours, visitors are welcome to visit the modest museum featuring artifacts excavated from the de Soto encampment site and Anhaica.
