Historic Places/ModernSpaces: Preservation in Greater Miami

The Florida Trust for Historic Preservation announces its 2015 annual conference, the 37th annual conference of the organization. The 2015 conference will take place in Miami, Florida May 7-9, 2015, and will feature workshops, local tours, and special events in the bustling historic downtown of Miami.The conference kicks off with the Opening Session at the remarkbly restored Scottish Rite Temple, where Secretary of State Ken Detzner and other dignitaries will welcome conference attendees to Miami. The Florida Trust will announce its 2015 Eleven Most Endangered Historic Sites during the Opening Session. Attendees will then return to the conference hotel for the Annual Meeting and Keynote Luncheon.The Keynote Address will be given by Alastair Gordon, award-winning critic and author who has written about the built environment for many publications including the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. He has published several critically acclaimed books including Naked Airport, Weekend Utopia, Spaced Out and Wandering Forms. Gordon is currently a Distinguished Fellow at the Miami Beach Urban Studios (FIU) and architecture critic for the Miami Herald. Gordon launched the Wall to Wall blog on the Wall Street Journal web site and continues to write it as: alastairgordonwalltowall.com Thursday evening features the Opening Reception, to be held at Miami Freedom Tower, a National Landmark sometimes referred to as the Ellis Island of the South for its role from 1962 through 1974 as the Cuban Assistance Center.Friday evening features the 2015 Preservation Awards Ceremony at the recently-restored Miami Senior High School. Honorees will then be celebrated at the Awards Reception at The Historic Alfred I. DuPont Building.The conference always features all-day tours on Saturday, and the Miami tours won’t disappoint.Watch for announcements on the Florida Trust website.
