FLIGHT TO FREEDOM (PUBLIC DAY)

Reenactor James Bullock

“Flight to Freedom” tells the story of courage, determination and perseverance along the perilous journey for Africans seeking freedom in Spanish Florida. Visitors walk along the freedom trail accompanied by a guide as they encounter a freedom seeker, a Yamasee also in search of freedom, a trapper turned bounty hunter and a Franciscan friar who directs them to a canoe waiting to take them the final few miles by coastal waterway to Spanish Florida. As they reach the outskirts of Saint Augustine, they are greeted by the leader of Fort Mose and Captain of the Black Militia Francisco Menendez. Spanish soldiers and members of the Black Militia welcome them with a historic weapons demonstration. Community life at Fort Mose is represented by Spanish Colonial cooking demonstrations in the chosa.
