Experience Fort Mose: The Waning Days of the First Fort Mose

As a prelude to the sixth annual commemoration of the Battle of Bloody Mose on June 21-22, 2014, Fort Mose presents a program dedicated to the people of Fort Mose , the men who defended it and their leader Captain Francisco Menendez. Throughout the day, visitors will have the opportunity to experience life at Fort Mose in the tense days before the advancing British force led by General James Oglethorpe of Georgia reached the outskirts of Saint Augustine and Fort Mose was abandoned. At 2 p.m. Dr. Jane Landers, Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of History, presents “Atlantic Transformations: the Many Lives of Francisco Menendez and his Free Black ‘Subjects’.”
